 AKA History

Founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University, Washington D.C., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became the first Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women. Ethel Hedgeman Lyle conceived the idea for the sorority’s formation and envisioned it as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates.

As the world became more complex, however, there was a need for associations that cut across racial, geographical, political, physical and social barriers. After its incorporation as a perpetual body on January 29, 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. branched out and became the channel through which selected college-trained women improved the socioeconomic conditions in their city, state, nation, and the world.

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind.
